January 2017 yarn club: Russalka; or, The Seacoast of Bohemia

A little over two weeks ago, I mailed out the January club yarn......

January’s colorway was called “Russalka; or, The Seacoast of Bohemia” and is named for a Joanna Russ fairy tale of the same name. As I was reading it I thought… some of these things seem familiar! It could very well be compared to the story of The Little Mermaid in that the main character is a Mermaid, of sorts, who gives up everything for the prince she loves. Unlike the Disney version, however - more like the Hans Christian Andersen version, actually - things don’t end well for the Mermaid.

I found this story in a hilarious book, “Don’t Bet on the Prince: contemporary feminist fairy tales in North America and England”, compiled by Jack Zipes.

If you chose sock weight, the yarn is Connie; an 80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon yarn that gets 6-8 stitches per inch on a US 0-2 and comes in 435-yard, 100-gram put-ups.

If you chose worsted weight, the yarn is Beth, a 100% Superwash Merino yarn that gets 4-5 stitches per inch on a US 7-9 and comes in 225-yard, 115-gram put-ups.

If you opted for swag, you’re getting lip balm in an enigmatic flavor I’m calling “Seacoast.” It’s hard to explain. Earthy, musky, floral-fruity… first you get apricot, coconut, and strawberry, followed by jasmine, orchid, and orange blossom… with base notes of patchouli and vanilla. OM NOM NOM. I have a few of these left, and I'll either include them as freebies in some purchases (randomly) or bring a handful to my next craft show.

Are you in yarn club? Feel free to post photos on the Ravelry spoiler threads, or tag @haldecraft on your Instagram pictures.

Thanks, y'all! February's yarn ships on the 13th!
