Works-in-Progress Wednesday (10/28/15)

Posted by A. Lorena Haldeman on

What are you working on this week? While yesterday was the least productive day I've had in a while, the days before and the rest of this week will more than make up for that! In ceramics I'm firing the kiln even as I type this, with some new Good Morning mugs (you know, the ones with the bluebird on the handle?), a mug that's a new design for me, and also some large planters. Today and tomorrow I'll be making yarn bowls, and I hope they'll be dry enough to fire the kiln by Saturday or Sunday at the...

The pressure to sell, sell, SELL!

Posted by 55799468 on

I read a lot of business blogs. Mostly handmade, heart-crafted ones, like Designing an MBA, Marketing Creativity, and Scoutie Girl, to name a few... but also the occasional larger post about big business ideals and strategies on aggregate sites (posts on social networking for businesses, SEO, blah blah blah)... because I'm one person doing my whole business and I want to treat people like people but I also want to make enough money to keep doing what I'm doing -- both of those things take smarts. It turns out that I can get a report of the items people most want to see back in stock, which is really going to help me in the sense of giving me an idea of what to make first. I'm more likely to move something to the top of the list of "to do" if I know someone is interested in it. Speaking of being...

Musings on pricing one's work

Posted by 55799468 on

Yesterday I drove about an hour south of where I live, to buy some supplies from a reasonably-local business (I call it "reasonably local" because it's only about an hour drive, tops, and it's another woman-owned ceramic supply company that started off small and is not corporate/big-box owned). Anyway. While I was there, I had a press mold in my pile of goodies that another customer saw while she was at the counter, and came back to where I was standing to ask where I had found it and had I seen another one as it was exactly what she...
